Speaker's Biography

Dr. Joe Yeh holds an M.D degree from National Taiwan University. After med school, he spent a year working on reconstructing the wiring diagram of the fruit fly brain in the Brain Center of National Tsin-Hua University. He later went to the University of Southern California for the Ph.D. program in pathology, where he discovered his passion for computer programming and image analysis when he learned to apply light microscopy techniques to investigate the cellular dynamics of embryonic development. Inspired by the power of computer algorithms to perform fast and accurate image analysis and its potential to improve healthcare, he left academia and founded aetherAI. aetherAI is a leading medical image AI company in Taiwan, working with top medical centers to develop AI models to help pathologists and radiologists achieve faster and more accurate diagnoses. aetherAI has won several startup awards, including the Nvidia Inception Award, Meet Neo Star Top Prize, Ministry of Science and Technology 10 Coolest Startups, Gold Medal of Startup Award by Ministry of Economic Affairs, and TAIPEI Prominent Enterprise Award. aetherAI has the largest share of the digital pathology market in Taiwan and is seeking to expand its presence overseas.

Advancing Medical Imaging with Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

Ever since deep neural networks outperformed humans in image recognition tasks in 2015, there has been tremendous enthusiasm for finding application areas where this powerful technology can impact. Medical imaging has attracted a lot of attention because of readily available data and its crucial role in the diagnostic and treatment planning process. Notably, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) outperformed human experts in diagnosing diabetic retinopathy, classifying skin disease, and identifying metastatic cancer cells in lymph nodes. Surprisingly, CNNs were also shown to predict cardiac risk factors using color fundus images and differentiate genotypes using histopathology images. These superhuman capabilities of CNNs have opened up many unforeseen opportunities for physicians to make better diagnoses and treatment planning. In this talk, I will use aetherAI's real cases to illustrate how artificial intelligence can bring higher standards to medical imaging, transform traditionally qualitative practice into a quantitative one, and ultimately impact the clinical decision-making process.
